Mastering the Inventory: A Guide to Items in DotA 1 (DotA Allstars)
In DotA Allstars—affectionately known by the community as DotA 1—victory is determined not only by your choice of hero but also by how you build your inventory. With a massive arsenal of 163 items, understanding where to buy them, how they combine, and how to manage your slots is essential for dominating the battlefield.
The Shopping Hubs: 15 Taverns
The game’s extensive item economy is organized across 15 different shops (taverns) distributed throughout the map:
- 14 Base Shops: Located safely inside the factions' bases, these merchants include specialised dealers such as the Weapon Dealer, Trophy Dealer, Arcane Sanctum, Enchanted Artifacts, and Supportive Vestments, among others.
- 1 Secret Shop: Hidden deep within the forest, the elusive merchant Leragas the Vile sells powerful components required for late-game builds.
Item Crafting and Mechanics
Items in DotA 1 do far more than just boost stats; many grant crucial active or passive abilities that can turn the tide of a team fight.
- Recipes and Combinations: Advanced items require specific combinations of base items and, in many cases, a dedicated recipe.
- Inventory Control: If items combine automatically but you need the individual components, you can disassemble them using your Circle of Power. Additionally, you can lock specific items to prevent them from accidentally merging into unintended combinations.
Key Inventory Rules and Restrictions
⚠️ The 6-Slot Limit: Every hero has a strict maximum capacity of 6 item slots in their inventory. Managing this space is one of the game's greatest challenges.
The Town Portal Exception
The only item with its own dedicated space is the Scroll of Town Portal, a vital consumable used to teleport to allied structures. However, this mechanic evolves as the game progresses:
- Purchasing Boots of Travel (Upgraded) grants you an infinite Scroll of Town Portal with a standard cooldown.
- Upgrading this further into Boots of Travel (Consumable) permanently absorbs the item. It is consumed from your inventory, freeing up a valuable slot while allowing you to retain all of its teleportation and movement benefits forever.
High-Stakes Wealth: The Divine Rapier
The Divine Rapier provides unparalleled damage, but it comes with a massive risk. It is the only item in the game that drops upon death, allowing the enemy team to pick it up and use it against you.
Limited Shop Stock
To maintain game balance, certain crucial items are restricted by restocking timers:
- Tome of Knowledge: Only becomes available in the shop every 10 minutes.
- Observer Wards: Take 6 minutes to replenish once purchased.
