Slark, the Murloc Nightcrawler: Skills and Item Build Guide — DotA 1

Slark, the Murloc Nightcrawler, is a formidable Agility-based carry and assassin in DotA 1, feared for his unparalleled ability to hunt, disable, and out-sustain isolated targets. As a slippery combatant, Slark excels at skirmishing in the shadows, using his kit to purge debuffs, leash enemies, and permanently drain his opponents' power. With a kit designed for hit-and-run tactics, he thrives when he can isolate a foe, steal their attributes to snowball, and vanish into the darkness before the enemy team can retaliate.

3. Hero Skills Breakdown

1. Dark Pact

Slark calls upon the deities of the swamps to seal a dark pact. After briefly sacrificing some of his lifeblood, he is redeemed of all negative effects. A short time later, a wave of destruction emits from the Nightcrawler, dealing damage to himself as well as all nearby enemies.

  • Damage Type: Magical (Self and Enemy)
  • Unique Behavior: Cleanses all negative status effects (Purge)
  • Area of Effect (AoE): Nearby radius around Slark

1 75 9 seconds 60
2 150 8 seconds 60
3 225 7 seconds 60
4 300 6 seconds 60

2. Pounce

Slark surges directly forward and latches on to the first enemy hero he strikes, binding them with chains of darkness. The enemy is unable to move beyond a certain radius from the point of impact, and most escape abilities are blocked while the leash is active.

  • Mechanic: Dash/Leash
  • Escape Restriction: Blocks most blink and teleportation-based escape abilities
  • Aghanim's Scepter Upgrade: Grants a second charge with a refresh cooldown and increases the maximum leap distance significantly

2 2.75 seconds 16 seconds 75
3 3.0 seconds 12 seconds 75

3. Essence Shift

Reciting ancient Nightcrawler incantations, Slark enchants his blade to steal the power and courage from his enemies. Every time he successfully strikes an enemy hero, he permanently or temporarily steals their attributes to fuel his own agility.

  • Attribute Theft: Steals points from all enemy attributes; grants bonus Agility to Slark
  • Permanent Gain: Killing a hero under the effect grants permanent Agility; temporary stacks are gained for every hit
  • Proximity Gain: Agility can be stolen if an enemy dies within a short radius of Slark

1 15 seconds Passive 0
2 30 seconds Passive 0
3 60 seconds Passive 0

  • Invisibility Type: True Invisibility (Cannot be revealed)
  • Passive Trigger: Active when out of enemy vision
  • Activation Delay: Slight delay when entering or leaving the effect
Level Passive Move Speed Bonus Passive Regeneration Bonus Active Duration Cooldown Manacost

4. Item Build Guide

Phase Recommended Items Strategic Purpose
Early Game Power Treads, Magic Wand, Orb of Venom Power Treads provide necessary stats and attack speed. Magic Wand is critical for survival in early dives, and Orb of Venom helps you stick to enemies before you have your full initiation combo.
Core Items Shadow Blade, Echo Sabre, Black King Bar Shadow Blade provides mobility and initiation. Echo Sabre is essential for doubling the hits on Essence Shift, and Black King Bar allows you to stay in fights to stack Agility without being controlled.
Late Game Skadi, Butterfly, Basher/Abyssal Blade Skadi provides massive health and a slow to keep enemies leashed. Butterfly amplifies your Agility stacking, and Abyssal Blade gives you the hard lockdown required to confirm kills on high-mobility targets.

5. Quick Gameplay Tips

  • Pounce Accuracy: Pounce is a skill-shot that only latches onto the first hero you strike. To ensure you hit, wait until you are within melee range or force the enemy into a narrow choke point (like a lane ramp or tree path) before casting. Using Shadow Blade to approach invisibly is the most reliable way to land the leash.
  • Purging with Dark Pact: Dark Pact is an incredibly strong self-purge. You can use it to remove almost any incoming stun, slow, or silence. Time the activation just before a projectile (like Vengeful Spirit's Magic Missile) hits you to negate the disable entirely.
  • Essence Shift Management: In prolonged teamfights, prioritize hitting enemies as often as possible to keep your Essence Shift stacks high. Each successful hit makes you stronger, faster, and more durable, eventually making it impossible for the enemy team to trade blows with you effectively.
