Rizzrak, the Goblin Shredder: Skills and Item Build Guide — DotA 1

Rizzrak, the Goblin Shredder

Rizzrak, the Goblin Shredder (familiarly known as Timbersaw), is a highly mobile, chaotic, and destructive Strength-based melee brawler and spellcaster in DotA 1. Equipped with a mechanical suit built to obliterate environments, his strength lies in a massive natural health pool and a unique ability to weaponize the map's terrain. By pulling himself rapidly across treelines, cutting down the primary attributes of his foes, and releasing spinning blades that slow the wounded, he excels at dealing unrelenting bursts of pure damage. The longer a physical brawl drags out, the more indestructible his reactive defenses become, making him a premier frontline menace.

Hero Skills Breakdown

1. Whirling Death

Whirling Death

Goblin Shredder whirls extremely sharp edges, dealing pure damage and reducing the primary attribute of any unfortunate enemy hero caught in an area around him. This attribute reduction debuff fully stacks with itself from consecutive casts. The ability becomes significantly deadlier if it successfully slices through a tree at the exact moment of casting.

  • Damage Type: Pure
  • Area of Effect (AoE): 325 range
  • Unique Behavior: If at least one tree is cut down by the whirl, the baseline damage of the spell is amplified. The primary attribute reduction severely drains the maximum health of Strength heroes, the armor/attack speed of Agility heroes, and the mana pools of Intelligence heroes.
Level Base Pure Damage Bonus Damage Per Tree Attribute Reduction % Debuff Duration Cooldown Manacost
1 80 +12 13% 12 seconds 6 sec 80
2 120 +18 14% 13 seconds 6 sec 80
3 160 +24 15% 14 seconds 6 sec 80
4 200 +30 16% 15 seconds 6 sec 80

2. Timber Chain

Timber Chain

Fires a high-velocity chain that embeds itself into the first tree it encounters, instantly pulling you to that tree's position and slicing any enemy unit caught directly in your travel path for pure damage.

  • Damage Type: Pure
  • Unique Behavior: Requires a tree to successfully latch onto; if the chain misses all trees, no movement occurs and no damage is dealt. Goblin Shredder can cast his other abilities mid-flight while being pulled.
Level Max Chain Range Pure Damage Cooldown Manacost
1 800 100 4 sec 60
2 950 140 4 sec 70
3 1100 180 4 sec 80
4 1250 220 4 sec 90

3. Reactive Armor

Reactive Armor

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger! Every physical attack directed at the hero triggers an adaptive reaction, temporarily increasing his physical armor and granting him bonus health regeneration.

  • Trigger Condition: Triggered by any incoming physical auto-attack command, including those from enemy heroes, lane creeps, and neutral forest monsters.
  • Unique Behavior: Accumulates distinct stacks that track their lifetimes independently, making the hero incredibly durable against fast-attacking low-damage targets.
Level Max Stacks Armor Per Stack HP Regen Per Stack Stack Duration Cooldown Manacost
1 6 0.9 +0.9/s 10 seconds Passive 0
2 12 1.0 +1.0/s 12 seconds Passive 0
3 18 1.1 +1.1/s 14 seconds Passive 0
4 24 1.2 +1.2/s 16 seconds Passive 0

4. Chakram

Chakram

Fires your main saw blade to a target location where it continuously spins, dealing damage in an area over time and slowing enemies dynamically based on their missing health percentage. The blade deals pure damage and cuts down trees in its path both when fired and when retracted. You completely lose the ability to perform basic attacks while the blade remains deployed.

  • Damage Type: Pure
  • Cast Range: 1200 range
  • Dynamic Slow Modifier: Slows enemies by 5% for every 5% of health they are missing.
  • Aghanim's Scepter Upgrade: Grants a second, independent Chakram sub-ability with identical behavior, allowing for dual saw management.
Level Launch/Retract Damage Damage Per Second (DPS) Cooldown Launch Manacost Sustained Mana Cost
1 100 50 8 sec 80 16/sec
2 140 75 8 sec 140 23/sec
3 180 100 8 sec 200 30/sec

Item Build Guide

Phase Recommended Items Strategic Purpose
Early Game Arcane Boots, Soul Ring, Magic Wand Rizzrak consumes vast amounts of mana. Arcane Boots and Soul Ring provide the necessary flat mana recovery to repeatedly cast spells, while Magic Wand offers emergency sustain.
Core Items Bloodstone, Shiva's Guard, Blink Dagger Bloodstone is his ultimate item, turning kills into permanent mana regeneration. Shiva's Guard adds armor, expansion mana, and an AoE freeze slow, while Blink Dagger offers instant repositioning to line up perfect chains.
Late Game Aghanim's Scepter, Heart of Tarrasque, Black King Bar Aghanim's Scepter unlocks a second Chakram to double his pure damage output. Heart of Tarrasque builds an unkillable health pool, and Black King Bar ensures he cannot be locked down by silences or stuns.

Quick Gameplay Tips

  • The Mid-Air Burst Combo: Because Timber Chain's pulling animation does not silence or disable your own actions, you can maximize your damage by firing a chain toward a tree behind an enemy hero. As your mechanical suit zips past the target, cast Chakram and Whirling Death mid-flight. This executes all three pure-damage spells simultaneously, melting the target before they can react.
  • Pre-Charging Armor in the Jungle: Before initiating a dangerous tower dive or teamfight, step into a nearby lane or neutral creep camp and let the weak creeps attack you a dozen times. This fully charges your Reactive Armor stacks to their maximum limit, allowing you to enter the fray with up to nearly 30 bonus armor and massive health regeneration from the very first second.
  • Tree-Dependent Attribute Shredding: Whirling Death reduces an enemy's primary attribute by a flat percentage, but it only deals optimal damage when a tree is cleaved. When fighting in the open river lanes, try to bait enemy heroes near the treelines. Slicing them down next to a tree inflicts deep bonus pure damage while instantly siphoning away a large chunk of their raw health and armor.
