Nevermore, the Shadow Fiend, is a premier, high-impact Agility carry and mid-lane hero in DotA 1, celebrated for his unmatched potential to dominate lanes, flash-farm, and dish out massive mixed damage. Despite beginning the match with fragile defensive statistics and low basic attack damage, Nevermore quickly scales into a terrifying force by consuming the souls of his fallen enemies. Combining high Agility growth with devastating, area-of-effect magical abilities, he excels at flash-farming minion waves and nuking down opposing teams in coordinated teamfights.

3. Hero Skills Breakdown
1. Shadowraze
Gives the Shadow Fiend the power to desecrate regions directly in front of him at varying, pre-defined distances. This ability deals magical damage to all enemies caught in its radius and applies a stacking damage amplifier on targeted units, causing them to take increased damage from subsequent strikes.
- Damage Type: Magical
- Targeting Mechanics: Three separate, independently keybound spells (Short, Medium, and Long range) that cast at fixed distances in the direction Nevermore is facing.
- Distances: Short (200 units), Medium (450 units), and Long (700 units).
- Area of Effect (AoE): 250 radius per raze.

2. Necromastery
Whenever the Shadow Fiend kills a target, he traps and stores its soul inside of him. For each stored soul, he gains a flat bonus to his physical attack damage. If Nevermore falls in battle, his own death releases a portion of his stored souls back into the ether.
- Soul Source: Earned by securing last hits on enemy units, neutral monsters, structures, or enemy heroes.
- Damage per Soul: +2 physical damage.
- Soul Loss upon Death: 50% of currently held souls are permanently lost when Nevermore dies.
- Aghanim's Scepter Upgrade: Increases the maximum soul capacity, allowing Nevermore to scale his attack damage even higher into the late game.

3. Presence of the Dark Lord
The presence of such a horrible creature terrifies nearby enemies, passively weakening their defensive physical armor.
- Mechanic Type: Passive Aura
- Area of Effect (AoE): 900 radius around Nevermore.
- Armor Reduction Type: Physical armor debuff (affects enemy heroes, creeps, and neutral monsters).

4. Requiem of Souls
Summons evil, high-energy spirits to erupt outwards from Nevermore, dealing magical damage to all units in the area. The total number of damaging spirits is directly determined by the count of stored souls in Necromastery, releasing one spirit wave for every pair of souls. Units close to Nevermore at the moment of release take vastly multiplied damage as they are struck by multiple overlapping waves. Affected units also become terrorized, reducing their movement speed and forcing them to flee. When Nevermore dies, this ability is automatically triggered at his location without using its cooldown, though this passive death-trigger does not apply the fear effect.
- Damage Type: Magical
- Wave Calculation: 1 spirit wave is released for every 2 souls stored via Necromastery.
- Maximum Fear Duration: 2.4 seconds (increases by 0.8 seconds per wave hit).
- Movement Speed Reduction: 25% slow during the fear duration.
- Aghanim's Scepter Upgrade: Causes the waves to move backward to Nevermore after reaching their maximum distance, dealing 40% of their original magical damage to enemies hit on the return trip.

4. Item Build Guide
| Phase |
Recommended Items |
Strategic Purpose |
| Early Game |
Bottle, Power Treads, Wraith Band, Magic Wand |
Bottle keeps your HP and Mana topped off while secure runes. Power Treads grant crucial attack speed and stat swapping, while Wraith Band compensates for early fragility. |
| Core Items |
Blink Dagger, Shadow Blade, Black King Bar (BKB) |
Blink Dagger and Shadow Blade provide the positioning power needed to land devastating triple-Shadowrazes and point-blank Requiems. BKB is absolutely essential to prevent enemy spells from interrupting your ultimate's channel. |
| Late Game |
Eye of Skadi, Butterfly, Daedalus, Aghanim's Scepter |
Eye of Skadi adds immense tankiness and crowd-control. Butterfly boosts physical evasion and Agility, Daedalus scales your Necromastery damage with critical strikes, and Scepter maximizes your soul count and Requiem damage. |
5. Quick Gameplay Tips
- The Triple-Raze Chain: Master aligning your hero's direction without moving to land your Shadowrazes in quick succession. If an enemy hero approaches to last hit, hitting them with a short-range Shadowraze (Q), followed by a quick step forward and a medium-range Shadowraze (W), and finally a long-range Shadowraze (E) will maximize your stacking raze damage amplifier to secure an easy kill.
- The Point-Blank Requiem (Blink-In): The damage of Requiem of Souls increases exponentially the closer you are to your target because more individual spirit waves will overlap and strike them. Use a Shadow Blade or Blink Dagger to position yourself directly on top of an enemy unit, activate your Black King Bar to prevent interrupts, and channel your ultimate to instantly vaporize them.
- The Passive Death Nuke: Never forget that when you die, Requiem of Souls automatically triggers at your corpse's location using your current soul count. In tight teamfights, dying in the center of the enemy team can still deal massive damage, turning a lost fight into an even trade or a clean wipe for your surviving allies.
