Meepo, the Geomancer: Skills and Item Build Guide — DotA 1

Meepo, the Geomancer, is one of the most mechanically demanding and unique Agility-based carry and initiator heroes in DotA 1. Renowned for his unparalleled ability to multiply himself, Meepo relies on micro-managing multiple clones to control the map, split-push lanes, and rapidly secure resources. He possesses balanced base attributes and an exceptionally high starting health pool, which provides crucial survivability in the early game. His main strength lies in his ability to overwhelm single targets through sheer numbers, chaining disables and explosive spatial teleports to tear down his foes.

3. Hero Skills Breakdown

1. Earthbind

Rains earthen spikes across a target area, pinning down all enemy units caught within its radius. This roots them to the ground and prevents them from moving or escaping.

  • Damage Type: None (Utility/Disable)
  • Area of Effect (AoE): 220 radius
  • Unique Behavior: Prevents affected units from using blink or teleportation spells, and reveals invisible units for the duration.
Level Casting Range Bind Duration Cooldown Manacost
1 500 2.0 seconds 20 sec 100
2 750 2.0 seconds 16 sec 100
3 1000 2.0 seconds 12 sec 100
4 1250 2.0 seconds 8 sec 100

2. Poof

Drawing mystical energies from the earth, Meepo channels briefly before teleporting to the location of another active Geomancer clone. This movement triggers a devastating shockwave that deals magical damage in an area at both the departure and arrival locations.

  • Damage Type: Magical
  • Area of Effect (AoE): 375 radius
  • Targeting: Ground-targeted or unit-targeted (limited strictly to Meepo clones)
  • Double Damage Mechanic: Enemies caught near Meepo during his departure and arrival will sustain damage from both instances.
Level Magical Damage Channeling Time Cooldown Manacost
1 70 1.5 seconds 12 sec 80
2 90 1.5 seconds 10 sec 80
3 110 1.5 seconds 8 sec 80
4 130 1.5 seconds 6 sec 80

3. Ransack

Each of Meepo's physical attacks drains health from the target unit and converts it into a burst of healing distributed to all active Meepo clones. This siphon is less effective against standard creeps, and is completely ignored by certain powerful entities.

  • Damage Type: Pure
  • Healing Target: Heals every active Meepo clone simultaneously by the exact amount stolen
  • Exclusions: Does not affect Roshan or enemy illusions
Level HP Stolen (Heroes) HP Stolen (Creeps) Cooldown Manacost
1 6 4 Passive 0
2 10 6 Passive 0
3 14 8 Passive 0
4 18 10 Passive 0

4. Divided We Stand

Meepo summons an imperfect, semi-autonomous duplicate of himself that can earn gold and experience independently. While clones share Meepo's abilities and attributes, they suffer an experience penalty and cannot carry or utilize items except for the boots equipped by the main Meepo. Crucially, the life force of all clones is bound together—if one falls in battle, they all perish.

  • Shared Death Rule: If any clone dies, all Meepos die instantly.
  • Item Limitations: Clones can only inherit the boots worn by the primary Meepo.
  • Experience Modifier: Clones only receive a small portion of normal experience.
  • Attribute Sharing: Clones inherit 100% of the bonus attributes equipped on the main Meepo.
  • Aghanim's Scepter Upgrade: Summons an additional active duplicate.
Level Active Clones Summoned Experience Share % Cooldown Manacost
1 1 30% Passive 0
2 2 30% Passive 0
3 3 30% Passive 0

4. Item Build Guide

Phase Recommended Items Strategic Purpose
Early Game Power Treads, Ring of Basilius, Poor Man's Shield Power Treads provide valuable Agility and Strength that are shared with all clones. Ring of Basilius ensures a healthy early mana pool for casting Earthbind, and Poor Man's Shield blocks incoming physical lane damage.
Core Items Aghanim's Scepter, Blink Dagger, Scythe of Vyse Aghanim's Scepter is the single most important item, granting a permanent extra clone and sharing 100% of your items' attributes. Blink Dagger is necessary to initiate with a sudden Poof-bombing strike, and Scythe of Vyse provides a reliable hard hex.
Late Game Heart of Tarrasque, Eye of Skadi, Ethereal Blade Heart of Tarrasque dramatically boosts your clones' survivability through massive flat HP. Eye of Skadi offers incredible balanced stats, and Ethereal Blade supplies massive Agility to increase your physical attack speed and damage.

5. Quick Gameplay Tips

  • The Blink-Poof Combo: To execute Meepo's signature initiation, select all of your active clones except the primary one. Cycle through them using the Tab key, casting Poof on the location of your main Meepo. Right before the 1.5-second channeling time completes, select your primary Meepo, use Blink Dagger to jump directly on top of an enemy, and cast Earthbind. All your clones will instantly teleport to your location, delivering massive overlapping magical damage.
  • Farming Rotation & Lane Stacking: Take advantage of your clones' ability to farm independently. Keep your main Meepo in the lane to secure experience and gold, while sending your clones to clear out jungle camps. Use Poof to quickly escape if an enemy hero attempts to gank a vulnerable, isolated clone.
  • Managing Low Health Clones: Because your life force is linked, enemies will always focus down the Meepo clone with the lowest current health. If one of your clones is heavily damaged, immediately micro-manage it to run back to safety, and use your remaining healthy Meepos to body-block the pursuing enemies or cast Earthbind to lock them down.
